RSPCA Australia is demanding an independent investigation into live export company Livestock Shipping Services (LSS) following serious allegations of criminal activity by its general manager.
Last night’s ABC 7:30 showed horrific cruelty suffered by Australian animals exported by LSS and aired evidence of alleged falsification of documents by a senior staff member within the company when he was working for Wellard.
This follows ongoing issues with LSS who are currently embroiled in a series of investigations into alleged breaches of the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS).
These include:
“The vision of cruelty alongside the criminal allegations is evidence enough that this company should not be allowed to export Australian animals until all investigations are complete,” said Heather Neil, CEO RSPCA Australia.
“Given the criminal nature of these allegations it would be appropriate for the Australian Federal Police to investigate, not just the Department of Agriculture.
“These events once again highlight the urgent need for ESCAS to be strengthened, not weakened. If Australian animals are to be afforded at least minimal protection, changes clearly must be made,” said Ms Neil.
