What are your animal welfare resolutions for 2018?

Each year, many of us take the opportunity to use the beginning of the New Year to make positive changes and resolutions for the year ahead.

What are your resolutions for 2018? Get healthier? Work hard and save more money? Or perhaps work less and spend more time with your family?

If you care about animals, you might have thought about what you can do to make the world around you a little bit better for animals in 2018.

Here are a few suggestions.

Resolution 1: Adopt don’t shop. If you are looking to expand your fur-family, make a commitment to adopting an animal that needs a home, rather than buying one from a pet shop. The RSPCA helps thousands of animals every year, and they are all vet checked, desexed and have been vaccinated and behaviour tested before they are available for adoption.

Resolution 2: Choose humane food when shopping and eating out. There is an ever-growing number of options available to people who want to ensure that their meat and eggs have a higher standard of welfare. RSPCA Approved chicken, pork, eggs and turkey are available in the supermarket. If you’re dining out, check out the RSPCA’s Choose Wisely directory to discover cafes and restaurants serving higher welfare food.

Resolution 3: Help wildlife. It can be difficult for wildlife living around your neighbourhood to find water in summer. If you have a spare container, you can fill it with water and put it in safe area in your backyard or near the front of your house to allow wildlife to find a drink when they need it. If you spot injured wildlife, contact your local RSPCA for help.

Resolution 4: Take action for change. The RSPCA runs a number of major campaigns each year to improve the lives of animals all over Australia. We advocate for better animal welfare outcomes for all animals, and we need your support and help. By signing up to our e-news, you will be kept informed of all the latest animal welfare news, and you might occasionally ask you to sign a petition to get our message across to policy makers and politicians. We also have a blog where we write about all things animal-related.

Resolution 5: Don’t support cruel entertainment. Every year in Australia, animals are used in cruel ways to entertain people. Animals take part in entertainment every day, but some forms are just too cruel or dangerous to be acceptable. Rodeos, greyhound racing, horse jumps racing put the animals at risk of severe injury and can be distressing to the animals involved. It’s important to understand that the animals are not choosing to participate, and that the practices around keeping and training animals for these things (such as keeping exotic animals in circuses) can also compromise their welfare.

Resolution 6: Volunteer. You can help out at your local animal shelter by volunteering your time and unused blankets to help enrich the lives of the animals there. We gratefully receive any donation, no matter its size, whether it’s a one-off donation or on a regular basis.

Resolution 7: Speak up. If you see or hear of cruelty happening to animals, call us. We are here to help animals in need and we investigate thousands of animal cruelty complaints each year. We need the help of people like you to let us know what is happening in our community and making sure that animals don’t suffer in silence.
