The search for higher welfare products in the supermarket has become a whole lot easier for Australian consumers with Coles today announcing their own brand of fresh chicken will be from RSPCA Approved farms.

The RSPCA’s Approved Farming Scheme ensures good welfare for meat chickens by focusing on the housing conditions that affect bird welfare, providing enrichment such as perches, and an environment that meets their physical and behavioural needs.

RSPCA Australia CEO Heather Neil said the announcement by Coles is a substantial step forward for animal welfare in Australia and proof that consumer demand for more humanely farmed food is growing quickly.

“The RSPCA applauds Coles’ commitment to source only RSPCA Approved chicken under its range of Coles brand fresh chicken, and its commitment to improving the welfare of farm animals,” said Ms Neil.

“Coles’ decision is one that will benefit both farm animals and consumers, with millions of meat chickens now being raised in higher welfare systems.”
