The RSPCA is today supporting the introduction of the Live Animal Export (Slaughter) Prohibition Bill in Federal Parliament, which seeks to end the live export of animals for slaughter. The Bill amends the Export Control Act 1982 in order to prevent the future export of cattle, sheep, goats and any other animals sent overseas to be killed.
The RSPCA’s longstanding policy opposes the export of live animals for slaughter. The RSPCA instead advocates for further expansion of the chilled and frozen meat-only trade, a trade worth more than 7 times the live export industry and employing tens of thousands of people. This would mean animals are raised and slaughtered in Australia to Australian animal welfare standards, processed at Australian facilities and then the meat exported.
