The RSPCA is opposed to any illegal trespass onto farms. Raising awareness of animal welfare issues should only be conducted via lawful activities.

The footage released today from a piggery in Western Australia highlights the extreme confinement of pigs that is legal in Australia.

The RSPCA is opposed to this type of extreme confinement where sows are housed in sow stalls and traditional farrowing crates because pigs in these systems cannot express their natural behaviours.

RSPCA Inspectors can only enforce the law as it stands.  Provided that producers are operating within these laws, the RSPCA cannot prosecute them for using intensive farming practices.

The RSPCA encourages producers to farm to higher welfare standards, and encourages consumers to choose products from higher welfare farming systems such as the RSPCA Approved Farming Scheme.
