More than 100,000 emails have been sent from Australians as they join the global push demanding cosmetics companies end animal testing once and for all.

RSPCA Australia has joined forces with RSPCA UK to call on international cosmetics companies to put an end to animal testing, by launching the Australian contingent of the global Makeover the World campaign.

Many Australians have been shocked to learn around 27,000 animals including rabbits, mice and rats are still suffering painful and distressing tests globally, all in the name of beauty.

“A lot of people might think animal testing in cosmetics is a thing of the past, but sadly it’s still used by many leading beauty brands around the world,” said Dr Bidda Jones, Chief Scientist, RSPCA Australia.

It can be difficult for consumers to decipher if a company  tests on animals because of confusing claims like:

We do not conduct animal testing on our products or ingredients, nor ask others to test on our behalf, except where required by law.

It sounds like this company doesn’t test on animals, right? Wrong.

“If a company wants to create a new line of products which contains new ingredients it will often be required – by law – to test these ingredients on animals before they can be used,” said Dr Jones.

“With more than 20,000 chemical ingredients already approved and available to be used in the creation of products, there is no need for future testing or future suffering to take place.”

The RSPCA and Makeover the World supporters are calling on all cosmetic companies to end animal testing by publically making an equal commitment to:
- No longer use animals, or ask others on their behalf to use animals, to develop new products or ingredients
- No longer market new products in countries where animal testing is required by law
- Help further the development of humane alternative methods.
