The Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS) investigation reports released today by the Department of Agriculture once again reveal the horrors Australian animals can experience when exported.
The reports also reveal that the Australian Government is unwilling or unable to impose penalties on exporters caught flouting ESCAS requirements that result in genuine change in exporter behaviour.
After decades of exporting animals from Australia and three years of ESCAS being in operation, exporters should be able to control their supply chains and ensure animals are slaughtered in approved facilities that meet the most basic World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) guidelines. Alarmingly, it seems too many cannot.
