Every day millions of Australians are unknowingly contributing to animal cruelty by buying and consuming products containing cage eggs.

Today the RSPCA is urging consumers to make a flap and help Set a Sister Free by telling their favourite brands to make the switch to cage-free eggs and help more than 11 million hens stuck in cages spread their wings.

It’s time to unscramble the facts about eggs: at least 1.9 billion eggs (40% of all eggs produced in Australia) go into food manufacturing, restaurants, cafes and catering, and nearly ALL of them come from hens confined to cages - but it doesn’t have to stay that way.

“Australian’s care about the welfare of the animals that produce their food, but very few people know about the ‘hidden cage eggs’ in some of the products they eat,” said Hope Bertram, RSPCA Australia Humane Food Marketing Manager.

“Products such as cake mixes, pancake mixes, biscuits, pasta sauces, mayonnaise, frozen meals and baked goods often contain cage eggs.

“Consumers have enormous power when it comes to persuading companies to make a change, by simply writing to their favourite brands Australians have the ability to help free millions of hens,” said Ms Bertram.
